Pulau Jemuruk

Portfolio Description

Description

Pulau Jemuruk, a small remnant island at the mouth of Sungai Kubang Badak, is a hidden gem that holds immense geological and historical significance. This fascinating island represents the youngest layer of the Cambrian-age Machinchang Formation, dating back 550-500 million years.

What makes Pulau Jemuruk extraordinary is its role as a window into ancient marine life. Geologists have discovered trilobite index fossils (Family Saukiidae) within its fine sandstone layers. Trilobites, among the earliest complex animals, thrived during the Cambrian Period but disappeared during the End Permian mass extinction 252 million years ago. These fossils serve as crucial evidence of Earth’s history, marking the timeline between the Cambrian and Permian Periods.

The island also features trace fossils, such as Dictyodora spp., which record the activity of ancient marine animals on the seafloor. These remnants, alongside the island’s distinctive layered rock formations resembling a “layer cake,” make Pulau Jemuruk a site of significant geological interest.

Beyond its scientific value, Pulau Jemuruk supports the local community as a source of food, with residents collecting snails and oysters along its shores. However, the preservation of its fossils and natural heritage is critical, as human activity continues to pose a threat.

Pulau Jemuruk isn’t just a geological marvel—it’s a testament to the island’s rich history and an important resource for both education and local livelihoods. Visitors are encouraged to appreciate its beauty responsibly, ensuring the conservation of this natural treasure for future generations.
