Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark is home to one of Southeast Asia’s oldest mountain formations, originating during the Cambrian period over 550 million years ago. This rich geological diversity has given rise to an equally abundant variety of flora and fauna. It is also home to one of the first rainforests on the planet to present the contribution of Geoparks in the archipelago of 99 islands of Langkawi.

The core intention of geotourism is to educate visitors about geological features and processes, conserving while offering them for future generations. At the same time, geotourism provides economic benefits to local communities while providing activities that are of low impact towards the environment. The main attractions located within the conservation area are Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park, Machincang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and Kubang Badak Bio Geo Trail. These are the protected areas that visitors can visit to catch a glimpse of some eye-catching flora and fauna species.

The Cable Car ride provides a bird’s eye view of the northern part of Langkawi. Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is picturesque karstic formation mangrove forest created through the dissolution and erosion of the limestone, which produces numerous sea stacks, sea arches and pinnacles. The mangrove forests have created an environment suitable for several rare species of flora and fauna such as the limestone cycad; which grows on vertical cliff faces, bright yellow sea hibiscus, the iconic Brahminy Kite Red Eagle and White-Billed Sea Eagle. The package will comprise of tourists planting one mangrove tree or native tree in Langkawi.

The Kubang Badak BioGeo Trail is one of the best places to observe the geological and cultural history of Langkawi. This unique tidal river estuary ecosystem is located in the west of Langkawi. The untouched mangroves have a distinguished cultural and early settlement history relating to the Thai community. There are 13 interesting sites to visit in Kubang Badak. Whether your preference is to take a boat ride to explore the mangrove, or going on a bird watching trip to seek shorebirds and mangrove birds, it is entirely up to you.

Laman Padi

A Culture Center

Laman Padi is a living museum and an eco-tourism attraction conceptually based upon love for nature in the tradition of rice ecosystems. Set in an area 13.86 acres in size, the natural setting promotes a rustic and serene view of the 8.6 acre paddy field within the compound. The rice heritage is invaluable – it’s history and traditions dating hundreds of years ago can be appreciated by visiting the exhibition at the gallery. The traditional practices of paddy farming together with the artifacts assembled are uniquely blended amidst the real setting of a paddy field environment.

After wandering around the paddy field and gallery, visitors can relax at the pavilion, resting sheds or balconies available at the complex, where they can view the open field from afar. Nature lovers can also explore the surroundings and appreciate the established paddy field landscapes or the herbal garden around the complex. If you’re up for it, you can even try rice planting for yourself at the Garden of Variety.
